How to put LEDs on your RC car — Complete guide 2026

You watch RC car videos on YouTube and you're fascinated by these models with headlights that light up, brake lights activating at the right moment, and these exhaust flames bursting on stick release? Good news: it's totally doable, and much simpler than it seems.

In this guide, I'll explain exactly how to equip your RC car with a complete LED system, from material selection to first startup.

Why add LEDs to your RC car?

Beyond aesthetics, LEDs bring a real plus to scale realism. When your headlights turn on as soon as you give throttle, brake lights activate on braking and turn signals automatically engage on stop — your RC car really looks like a real miniature vehicle. It's especially impressive in crawling or scale trail.

The required equipment

For a complete system, here is what you need:

  • Un Arduino Nano ESP32 — le cerveau du système, avec Bluetooth intégré
  • Des LEDs — blanches pour les phares et feux de recul, rouges pour les feux arrière, oranges pour les warnings, bleue et orange pour les flammes d'échappement
  • Des résistances — 220 Ω et 300 Ω selon les LEDs
  • Des fils de connexion et une PCB universel pour le prototypage

How does it work?

The Arduino ESP32 reads the PWM signal from your RC receiver on a dedicated pin. This signal varies between about 1000 and 2000 microseconds depending on throttle stick position. Arduino interprets this signal and lights LEDs accordingly:

  • Stick forward → full beam headlights
  • Stick back (braking) → brake lights on
  • Stick back (confirmed reverse) → reverse lights
  • Car stopped for X seconds → automatic hazards
  • Full throttle or release → exhaust flames (5 configurable effects)

The Flare RC app

Calibration is particularly handy: you launch the wizard, move your stick in all positions, and the app automatically detects the min/max/neutral values of your radio. It even handles inverted signals, common on some radios.

⚠️ Crucial point: always connect your receiver's GND to the Arduino's GND. Without this common connection, the signal will be erratic and your LEDs will flash randomly at startup.

The result

Once the build is finished and calibrated, you have a fully automatic system. No more need to touch the Arduino — everything works on power up. Future firmware updates are done via USB cable and Arduino IDE on your PC.
